I was invited to a rare opportunity to fire in the East Creek Anagama kiln in my area, and this group of bowls turned out incredibly well. I would prefer to keep them as a group in hopes that they find their home in a tiny restaurant that often seems to require about 25 pieces. I offer a large discount for chefs ordering in bulk. These are made of a smooth porcelain whose color is derived from a tiny mine in Idaho, and then they were fired in a particular kind of firing known as reduction cooling, where the kiln is still stoked after peak temperature is reached and as the kiln is cooling. This is a bit of an esoteric process but the moody smokey colors that are pulled out of the clay body suit my tastes to perfection. The dark palette and is worth the extra effort.

This bowl is actually an oval in its interior space, and then the “wings”, inspired by manta rays, make a gently undulating frame 90 degrees off of that oval. They stack surprisingly well, they have a rounded lip that resists chipping, and they are interesting without being distracting to the chef’s creations.

These small wing bowls are 1 1/4” tall, with an interior dimension of 4 1/2” by 6” (the plated area), and an exterior dimension of 7 1/2” by 6+” (the frame)
